A little Tender logic

Spam is a never ending battle for just about any web based system that allows anonymous user discussions. The nature of Tender is to let users easily post discussions, which means that we too are susceptible to spam.

For some Tender accounts, spam has become a problem. We've managed to filter a great deal of spam coming into the system, but a handful of spam has been making it through those filters.

For some Tender accounts, spam has become a problem. We've managed to filter a great deal of spam coming into the system, but a handful of spam has been making it through those filters.

The painful truth wasn't so much the fact that spam was making it through, but that when a spam comment was added to an open discussion, it was emailed out to all of those users. Not cool. Not cool at all.

After some debate on how to best handle the problem, we've just deployed a logic spam buster to curb off the remaining spam. This feature is purely experimental for the time being.

Users who are not logged in to Tender will see an additional line in the discussion forms. This line presents the user with a general logic question, such as "What is five times five?".

While it's not a complex feature to add, it's still fairly unpolished. The form will be cleaned up in the coming days to make it more aesthetically pleasing while we continue to refine it to help stop the remaining spam that is slipping into Tender.

Please let us know if you come across any issues.

If I were planning on posting anonymously, I’d accept the need to deal with a captcha as the price to post, and I’ve found that to work really well.

I understand the need to have a low barrier for entry, but spam is the price you pay for setting it too low.

@JGeiger—indeed, we want avoid standard captcha systems as in our experience they have proven to fail the user on a number of instances. We also have plans for some more internationalization options so a logic spam buster can be completely customizable.

@Thomas—I assume you mean in the feed for the blog? Indeed there was a problem with our template settings on the blog, it was picking up the blurb for the front page and reinjecting it back into the feed. I believe we have fixed it for the future.

Just a reminder to make these internationally accessible - I just got “Jack and Jill went up the…” - what? I’m not American, I’ve no idea what you’re talking about. I mean I can google, but it’s a bit frustrating.

Robert: we’ll be tweaking the questions. The actual plugin is pretty primitive with no internationalization features yet, but we’ll be adding them. We may even add site-specific captchas.

I’m also deploying a tweak that treats users with 3 or more non-spammy comments as a trusted user. Trusted users are able to bypass the captcha completely.
