Lighthouse Interface Updates

We just rolled out the first in a series of interface updates to Lighthouse that we're really excited about. This is something that has been in our playbook for quite some time, and with some awesome user feedback on our Lighthouse Tender, it is now becoming a reality.

So what's in this update? The highly requested universal dashboard. You can now jump to any project or account that you have access to from anywhere within Lighthouse.

Making good use of your global profile

You've always been able to use the same user profile for any Lighthouse account. This saves us from having to remember different usernames and passwords, but there was not a way jump to your projects in other accounts. Our new "user badge" works like QuickSilver, when you start typing a name the results are immediately filtered and displayed, allowing you to navigate quickly to other areas of Lighthouse. If you're a fan of Github (like we are!), you will be familiar with this UI convention.

Lighthouse User badge

Your profile page also gives you an overview of all your projects, across all your Lighthouse accounts. So what if you're viewing another users profile? The user profile will show all of the OSS projects that they are a member of.

Simplified navigation

We decided to simplify the interface by knocking it down to one row of tabs. The multiple rows of tabs were confusing new users so we moved the old Account & Settings tabs into standard links and placed them up top, out of the way. You can click the name of your account (ACTIVERELOAD in this case) to go to the account page, or the project name (GitNub here) to go back to what was "dashboard".

Simplified Lighthouse Navigation

Also, if you want to create a new ticket, we've moved the button to the sidebar on every page where it's applicable. This should make it easier to find.

More to come

This is just the first of many updates to come in 2009. We're looking forward to it!

My favorite feature on the old UI was the “current milestone” tab in the black nav bar. Though it is initially less confusing for new years, once you start being productive, a quick link the current milestone is very handy and keeps you focus on the task at hand. Please consider bringing it back.

Chirag, yeah we were actually just talking about the current milestone tab. Justin thinks it will probably make a comeback pretty quick into the lower UI area of the nav.

I have to second what Chirag wrote. When I refreshed and saw the current milestone gone, I starting weeping uncontrollably.

I also want current milestone back… all my navigation just because like 2 clicks longer… I would probably like the same location back best, but if you have other ideas I would be willing to try it.

good work with the silverlight like feature…

Oh, I’ve been dreaming about the global dashboard for so long. Praise be for the tastiness of global dashboard.

    +1 for current milestone.

And I really want fully sortable columns in all tickets views…

I too, like Chirag Patel, found the current milestone VERY useful. I want it back! Or make it a setting if you don’t want it to display for all users.

    Hi,

At first glance, it looks great, thanks.

A small remark : when using Fluid, switching project with the new autocomplete field open the new project in a new window. Strange.

    Thomas.

    milestone tab please :)

This is a pretty underwhelming upgrade.

I guess I am not so absorbed into the Cult of the Lighthouse Interface that I even bother with the milestones… which are really only useful because there is no other provision made for categorizing Tickets.

How about you guys take a couple steps back and fix something basic like the rather annoying way that Lighthouse mishandles urls in ticket description/ comments?

This is great, and I especially like the better single-profile support. The trouble is: I currently have several seperate profiles because a single one didn’t work very well before. Is there any way to merge these into one profile so I can access everything at once?

The “Create New…” button just seems wrong to me. The rest of the site has a flat color scheme, while that button has a gradient. Visually, it doesn’t flow well at all to me. I was actually a bit bummed when I saw the changes.

Hey all, I missed the current milestone tab too, but I just noticed there’s a link to it on the Overview page, in the sidebar, under Create new ticket, and above the “Completed xx of xx tickets” status bar. I can probably live with that.

The project search shows archived projects. Is this necessary?

Current Milestone is back and lovely as usual!

@Matt Baron – I’ll remove archived projects from the list.

@Drew—file a ticket on http://help.lighthouseapp.com and I’ll see if Rick can get those profiles merged for you.
